Checked-out, Checked-in

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Today I checked-out of the Strawberry Creek Inn bed and breakfast, where I had a fantastic time getting to know Rodney and Ian (the innkeepers), as well as many of the guests.  It’s always fun talking with new people about the places they enjoy traveling and staying. Rodney and Ian are two of the most hospitably innkeepers you’ll come across, and, they have a fascinating background. Rodney used to be a mathematician and musician (don’t ask me how someone could be so efficient with both sides of their brain).   Ian spent 25 years as a pediatric nurse, and, actually still works part time at a hospital in Riverside, CA.

After checking-out, and not yet done with Idyllwild, I checked-in to Rodney and Ian’s sister property…the Strawberry Creek Bunkhouse.  The Bunkhouse is a small upscale motel of sorts, with two separate cabins on the property offering sweeping views of the forest and small creek below.

After getting settled at the Bunkhouse I decided to take a hike on one of the vast number of trails in and around Idyllwild.  After getting some suggestions from Holly (one of the innkeepers here at the Bunkhouse) I opted for a hike that would provide some great views of local landmarks, as well as dense forest and spots of running water.

Before I headed to the Ernie Maxwell trail-head, I purchased a sandwich at a local shop and stuffed it into my backpack.  After reaching the end of the trail and turning around, I found a great spot to hang my ENO hammock (I never hike without it).  While I was enjoying my sandwich and the views, a hiker (Steve) came upon me and struck up a conversation.  We soon discovered that we had a much to talk about…I figure we spent nearly two hours conversing, some of which was as we hiked together back to the trail-head. I learned that Steve also shares a love of travel and has been all over the world as a sound technician for many of the most popular bands out there.

Steve, if you read this…thanks for stopping…it was great to have met you!

Viator’s ‘Win Your Dream Travel Job’ contest!

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

I hardly ever ask this of my peeps and followers, but if you could be so kind as to vote for me in the Viator’s “Win Your Dream Travel Job” contest, I would be much appreciative. The last time I asked folks to vote for me, I won a week-long trip down the Salmon River…with your support, I might just win a 60 day trip through Europe…all expenses paid.

All you have to do is click here and you’ll be taken to the Viator Facebook Fan page….click the “Like” button and my video should appear.  Then, just click the “Vote for this” icon. That’s it…super simple.

Thank you so much!

Arrived at the Strawberry Creek Inn

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

I went from sea level to mile high and am lovin’ it.  When I arrived at Strawberry Creek Inn yesterday, I noticed a chicken coop and got really excited for a breakfast with some fresh eggs…Rodney and Ian (the owners and innkeepers) did not disappoint.  This morning we had a delicious baked egg, turkey and basil dish, fresh fruit and a freshly baked biscuit with homemade preserves. Yum!

Today I enjoyed a stroll through downtown Idyllwild, a walk along Strawberry Creek, some much needed hammock time…and, a bit of reading while lounging on the deck with some fellow guests.

Tomorrow I’m going to take advantage of the hiking trails throughout the area.

Headin’ for the hills…

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

After several weeks in and around the San Diego area, I’m now headin’ for the hills of Mt. San Jacinto, which is located about an hour N.W. of Palm Springs.  I’ll be visiting the quaint mountain town of Idyllwild, while staying at the Strawberry Creek Inn.  Have you ever been to Idyllwild?  If so, do me a favor and leave a comment with some ideas of things to do.  Thanks!

Back in December I filmed a segment of “Check Please,” a PBS food critic show that is set to air this Thursday (4/5/12) at 7pm Arizona time…I’m excited to see how it turned out.  If you happen to watch it, please post a comment below and let me know how ya think I did?  Constructive criticism is always welcome. :-)

Who makes a better Innkeeper?

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

As you may know, I stay in a lot of B&B’s and Inns.  I recently stayed at a fantastic place on Coronado Island called, the “1906 Lodge.” After touring the property and talking with the owner for a spell, I think I made an interesting observation.  My question to you is…who makes a better Innkeeper, someone with a great deal of hospitality experience, or someone who has traveled a lot?

While each person brings something unique to the table, from my experience, I think the person who has traveled more often edges out the other to make the better innkeeper.  What say you?

Wine hour at 1906 Lodge

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

We just checked-in to the “Polo Room” here at the 1906 Lodge…wow, this property is fantastic. I just sat on the king sized bed…it’s so comfy I cannot wait to crawl in. There is a small patio overlooking the courtyard where I’m sure we’ll enjoy a morning cup-a-joe and a game of chess…a frequent ritual with Rhonda (my traveling companion) and me. The bathroom is posh and spacious with a huge shower and rain-style head.

Each evening at 5pm they offer a wine hour to get to know the other guests…we’re heading down to the parlor in just a few minutes.  I look forward to reporting more later.

Today…Coronado Island

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

I just arrived on Coronado Island—it’s been a long while since my last visit and I forgot what a lure this place is…it’s a fantastic destination—especially during the shoulder season when it’s a bit less busy.  I’ll be staying at what looks like a spectacular B&B…the 1906 Lodge.  This is a historic building that was completely renovated into a B&B just a few years ago.

Near Moonlight Beach

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Next stop is Encinitas…a cool surfing community just south of Carlsbad, CA.  I’ll be staying at a B&B two blocks from the beach at the Inn at Moonlight Beach.  Can’t wait for a sunset stroll, or perhaps a “moonlight” walk.

In search of “the ONE thing” in San Diego

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on Mike’s Road Trip 2.0 stuff, as well as enjoying my visit here in Carlsbad, CA with my sister. This week  my good friend and frequent traveling companion, Miss Rhonda, will be joining me. Rhonda has never been to San Diego, so I’m really looking forward to showing her around.  Since I’ll be playing tour guide, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do a video showcasing “the ONE thing” format that you’ll see more of in the feature.

We’re going to have a blast visiting places like Cabrillo NP, Sea World, Gas Lamp District, Sea Port Village, Old Town, Coronado Island, San Diego Harbor cruise and a whole lot more.  If you have any suggestions, please post a comment below.  Thanks!
