Wyndham Grand in Hangzhou

When I arrived in Hangzhou, China for the start of the 2015 Hangzhou Global Tour, I was simply thrilled to be staying at the Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale. The Wyndham Grand properties are the finest and highest level within the Wyndham System. The lobby and the accommodations are best described as contemporary Asian modern, with rich and luxurious accents throughout. The location is pretty good too, within walking distance of the famed West Lake, which attracts millions of visitors each year. As a matter of fact, many of the rooms have balcony views of the lake, including mine. And, the view from the rooftop deck and garden, are spectacular!

This was my first trip to China and I sort of expected the rooms to be on the smaller side, similar to what you might find in Europe. As I entered my King deluxe room I found it to be quite spacious and beautifully appointed. The spot halogen lighting really stood out, as did the chandelier over the center of the King sized bed. Everything about the room exuded comfort and luxury, from the spa-like bathroom with amenities you might not expect, to the uber comfortable bed and down pillows. This may not hold true for everyone, but I believe the most important thing for a good-night’s sleep are the pillows. At Wyndham, they feel the same way. There is a card next to the bed that lets guests know that if they are not satisfied with the pillows on the bed, to call housekeeping and they will bring whatever variety you desire. For me, the feather down pillows already on the bed were perfect. The work space and furniture were also helpful during my stay as I had a lot of writing and editing to do during my 10 nights at the hotel.

The staff is also extremely attentive, as you might expect at any fine hotel. One day I was aimlessly looking around the lobby when a sharply dressed man asked if he could be of service. What really stood out was that this individual was not Chinese. I chatted him up for a while and learned that he was one of the managers (Gandy) of the hotel and hailed from Mexico. I had a number of questions, such as where to find an ATM, as well as some sights to see within walking distance.  Later that day Gandy even called my room to make sure everything was to my satisfaction and to see if there was anything else he could help me with—this was all before he knew who I was. As a pseudo VIP I often receive extra attention, but Gandy was so genuine in his interest to make sure that I had everything I needed during my stay that it made my visit that much more enjoyable.
