Strangest road trip sights

As many road trip miles as I have driven, I continuously see things that make me do a double take, often beckoning me to turn around and grab a photo. While thumbing through some old photos, I decided to make a folder of my strangest road trip sights.  Here are just a handful…

WICKEDLY WHIMSICAL CAR IN TONOPAH STATION, NEVADA

While road tripping trough a rural part of south central Nevada, I came across this wickedly whimsical old Volvo decorated which every piece of ornamental tchotchke the owner could find.

FROG SHAPED BOULDER IN ARIZONA

North of Wickenburg, Arizona I came across this small mountain range with a painted boulder in the shape of a giant frog. Ribbit. Ribbit.

STREET SIGN IN FOREST

While hiking through the Olympic National Forest in Washington State, I came across the oddest of sights…a street sign.

TREETOP ROCKS

In Oregon I saw a series of trees that had been topped off with giant rocks placed on top. Aliens must have gotten tired of crop circles.

HUMAN WATER FEATURE

HUMAN WATER FEATURE - Photo by Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com

This photo was taking a while ago and I cannot recall where it was, but I think it might have been at a Vegas resort. What’s odd about this image is that it looks like a normal (ornate perhaps) water feature, but it’s actually a person! The human water feature sculpture stays still for a long while, then the unsuspecting onlooker is amazed when they discover it’s not a fixed sculpture, but rather a human.

BAG LADY WITH A CAR

In the Pacific Northwest I saw a bag lady who owned this dilapidated car. The entire car was filled with junk. The woman got out of the car and opened the trunk, which was held shut by a bungee cord. She began removing large plastic bags filled with aluminum cans. Then, she began dumping the cans on the ground. Bag after bag she was pouring the cans onto the ground. She then got back in her car and started driving back and fourth over the cans, crushing them flat. It was a very bizarre and unusual sight.

HOUSE MADE OF A BOAT

I’m familiar with a houseboat, but a house made from a boat? This was a new one.

STRANGE LOOKING FUNGI

strang growth mushrooms

I’m not sure if these are mushrooms or note, but thought they were an interesting looking fungi I saw growing while hiking through Sol Duc in the Olympic National Forest.

NEARLY SUNKEN BOAT

One year I drove down Hwy 1 down the Pacific Coast. I can’t recall where this photo was taken, but I believe it was along the coast of Washington State. I thought this was an odd sight to see a boat beached and nearly underwater.

WOMAN SLEEPING WHILE STANDING UP

I’ve heard of people being able to sleep while standing up, but I had never seen it before. She even has a blanket.

MASSIVE ICICLES

It gets really cold in Montana during the winter and icicles are not unusual, however seeing them on the side of the road with no clear source of water seemed to be an odd sight.

There have been many times during my road trips that I have not been able to capture a shot, but the image left an indelible mark nonetheless.
