Now in the ‘Coolest’ place in the Adirondacks

I’m currently in the ‘Coolest’ place in the Adirondacks….which is the double entendre slogan for Saranac Lake.  As I’ve found, the Adirondacks can be a bit confusing. For example, I’m staying in Saranac Lake (the town) at Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Inn, and my wonderful lake view accommodations…they actually overlook Lake Flower. In any event, I feel as though I’m staying on a houseboat, that’s how close my room is to the lake.  It’s pretty awesome to wake up to this view each morning.

Last night I had a very interesting dining experience at a place called, “Eat ‘n Meet.”  What’s different about this restaurant is that you have to go to their website and look at the daily menu. Once you’ve figured out what you’d like to order, you call them up and place it and tell them what time you’d like to eat.  When you get there, your food will be ready to enjoy (provided you called far enough in advance…I recommend a couple hours). Eat ‘n Meet is without question the quintessential “hole-in-the-wall,” and had it not come highly recommended, I’m not sure I would have tried it.  I am however so glad I did…chef John cooks up some delicious dishes.  Check back later for a full write-up of the experience.

Today I got a tour of one of one of the “great camps,” which until recently was a term I was not familiar with.  A great camp is a place that the super wealthy built to escape the big city and get closer to nature. There are not many great camps still in existence, so I was excited to visit White Pine Camp to get a lowdown on its history, the area, and the people that once visited this palatial retreat. While I was there, I got to throw a few balls down a 100+ year-old bowling alley. More on this to come as well.

Soon I will be going on a boat ride around the Saranac Lake region and its connecting river. Tomorrow…a tour of a “cure cottage,” kayaking around the lake and a visit to a wildlife center. The fun never ends on Mike’s Road Trip.
